They are beautiful and bloom early in the spring but they sure do make a thicket if you don't keep them pruned and pruning kind of defeats their purpose. The only place I would plant them now would be if I had a large property, I'd put them way at the back perimeter and just let them grow wild. I have seen it root into the cracks between stones in a stone wall so I suppose it could do some damage if you let it get out of control. The best idea is not to let that happen. Prune it back HARD every spring after it has flowered. It will flower much better the next year and will stay under control and look much better.
