I don't know about the roots, but they sure grow fast and tall and wide. They are beautiful and bloom early in the spring but they sure do make a thicket if you don't keep them pruned and pruning kind of defeats their purpose. The only place I would plant them now would be if I had a large property, I'd put them way at the back perimeter and just let them grow wild.

Forsythia can definitely get out of control, and it sends out roots frpm the end of its shoots when they touch the ground. I have seen it root into the cracks between stones in a stone wall so I suppose it could do some damage if you let it get out of control.
The best idea is not to let that happen. Prune it back HARD every spring after it has flowered. It will flower much better the next year and will stay under control and look much better.

they normally grow about 12 feet around but you can keep them trimmed into a nice hedge. I've never heard of them cracking a foundation. 15 years of garden center expreince.

It's ok. Just keep it under control by pruning it.
